Geocaching: Hide And Seek Dates

By: Doug Glazebrook

Geocaching: Hide And Seek Dates! Geocaching is a phenomenon that’s sweeping the world and has likely invaded your surrounding area, whether you realize it or not. It involves using Global Positioning System (GPS) technology to find items that Geocaching enthusiasts have hidden for others to find. There’s an initial investment required in order to purchase a GPS locator, but once you do, it’s a relatively inexpensive hobby. It deserves mention here because it also makes a great creative dating idea.

The GPS system has a long history, born out of one of the greatest forces driving the advancement of technology—the military. It consists of 24 geosynchronous satellites that orbit the earth that can be used to determine the location of a signal, usually down to about 20 feet or closer. The approval of use of the GPS system by the public came on May 1, 2000. Since then, GPS usage has grown exponentially and so has the game of Geocaching.

Geocaching is really easy to do. First off, you need to look in an online log book for locations and coordinates of caches in your area. Once you decide on one or two or three, you need to go out and search. Finding some locations may be a walk in the park, depending on the coordinates, while others might be a march through some area you would never imagine yourself venturing through. When you find an item, you need to leave another for the next person to locate. Once you return home, you are required to log your find in the logbook and the game continues on.

There are many benefits of this type of game for dating. First off, it gets you outdoors and doing something a little out of the ordinary. Geocaching also has a solid base in the exploration and care of nature, so it’s a learning experience, too. It’s fun to try and hide items and find where others have put them and sometimes these cached items travel the globe, and even buying new items to hide for others adds a different aspect to a date that otherwise might be too ordinary to leave a lasting impression.

Geocaching may not be for everyone, but it certainly provides a break from the usual ways of getting to know someone. If you’ve tried it yourself, leave your experiences below. Some times a great date just needs the perfect location to make sparks fly.
