Impossible Relationships

By: Jenn Malko

If you’ve ever been in a relationship that you knew was impossible, you probably still have the scars. Impossible relationships start out like most others. There’s a period of discovery that happens between two people where they probe and uncover details, hoping to find the true person and a sincere connection underneath the mask that we all wear. At one point something changes for one or both parties. It comes quick to the mind and rings like the snapping of a branch in a deserted forest, severing the progression of the relationship. Once it is realized, the only thing to do is to embrace the impossibility.

Impossible relationships can occur for many reasons. Sometimes they develop when needs can’t be met, such as when one person wants children while the other does not. An impossible relationship can sprout from the seeds of personality, blossoming when you finally get to know a persons real motivations and beliefs. They can also occur from social or geographic conditions. Impossible relationships like this can happen when two people live far away from each other or when certain social pressures, such as race, class or politics come into play. However they appear, these relationships only signal disaster.

Continuing on with someone when you know there’s no hope for a future can be both painful and wrong. It doesn’t matter who makes the decision or comes to the conclusion first. All that matters is that the bleak reality has been uncovered. If you know that you won’t be able to make things work, then it is wrong to pretend otherwise. This comes down to honesty and openness. Any relationship you’re in deserves that much respect. On the other hand, if you realize that the other person is the one screaming impossible, then it comes down to how much pain you’re willing to tolerate and for how long. Making the decision that a coupling has no future can be extremely difficult for both parties. If you see that someone has made the decision for you, the right thing to do is to meet them half way and help bring about a fair settlement to the impossible relationship.

There are some that would hope to make the “impossible” possible. These are the dreamers. The world needs more dreamers but tender hearts are the ones that always get stepped on in situations like relationships without a future. Romantic endings are for fairytales and true connections. The only way to secure an ending like that is to avoid impossible relationships and search for the real true love that we all know is out there!

I m in a long distance relationship with a Norwegian guy. Different races, different religion, different traditions and family beliefs. Nothing could be more opposite -Black/White, short/tall, smoker/non smoker, Christian/Atheist..the list goes on & yet we ve been together for nearly a year with plans for me to move to Norway at the end of the year. All so crazy, but life s not meant to be simple.

Impossible relationships are never intentional. Never expected. Never the ideal. However, they are too often the norm. Impossible is sort of a strong word. There are choices we make (mutually or not) that either extend or end our relationships. For example, people have converted religions for marriage. If love is real, EVERYTHING in your power should be used to keep it. My two cents.

Who exactly is going to stop dreamers from dreaming, lovers from loving? There are more of the impossible relationships that hide under the mask of marriage than anywhere else. If dreamers have a chance to change turn and find someone else, the unhappy marriage keeps people in its dirty grip, enslaved for life.

Impossible relationships ..when a religion tells a man who he should and shouldnt marry causing pain for both parties and casting him out of his religion if he does that. It can take a whole life time to find a person you love and a moment to lose them because of words in a book that is considered the only truth.
