Romantic Movies: A Few Suggestions
By: Jenn Malko
There’s
nothing like a night in with a big bowl of popcorn, a great movie and that special
someone curled up by your side. If you’re looking for a romantic
movie to help set the mood, we’ve got a few suggestions for you.
Not every picture will be to your taste. After all, romance is different for
everyone. But with some inside knowledge as to what your date finds romantic,
you’ll be able to pick out a flick that sets your romance ablaze!
The Holiday
I would never have imagined a movie with Cameron Diaz and Jack Black playing two of the four romantic leads would be a good watch, but surprise! When two women switch houses to get away from tragic romantic relationships, they find themselves renewing their faith in love with a couple of surprising gents. Kate Winslet plays the other female lead while Jude Law rounds out this foursome.
The Bridges of Madison County
Clint Eastwood and Meryl Streep deliver a perfect performance in this drama about finding true romance and having to sacrifice it. Eastwood plays a photographer out on assignment for National Geographic in rural Iowa. He stumbles onto a farmhouse while lost and gets directions to one of the areas famous covered bridges from Streep. This tearjerker should rate on any romantic movie list you happen to be making!
You’ve Got Mail
This movie signaled the dawn of the online era and its acceptance into pop culture. A wealthy bigblock bookstore owner, played by Tom Hanks, opens up a new superstore in New York, right down the street from a children’s bookstore. The shop is owned by Kathleen Kelly, played by Meg Ryan, who is forced close because of the big bad bookstore that just opened down the street. The leads share a romantic exchange over instant messaging, ringing in the arrival of a new age of personal communication.
Moulin Rouge
If you’re in the mood for a musical with all the glamorous pomp of any proper stage production, you might want to take a pass by Moulin Rouge. This romantic story is set during the Bohemian Revolution at the height of the famous Moulin Rouge’s popularity. Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor star in this tale of a penniless writer who uses his words to woo a renowned cortizan. Modern-day music keeps the movie fresh and relevant to society today.
The American President
The American President puts a political spin on romance in the White House. Don’t expect any closed-door Oval Office shenanigans to play out in this love story. Michael Douglas plays a widowed President while Annette Benning plays an environmental lobbyist. The relationship plays out in the public spotlight and is challenged by the political nature of office and cause.
The Lake House
Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock team up again for this love story that sees the pair fall in love through the mail, writing letters to one another while living years apart in the same house. If you can get your head around the concept and fall into it, this is a good watch. True love, like this movie, is always worth the trouble you go through to find it.
The Notebook
Lost love is one of the most tragic tales of romance. The Notebook follows the life of a poor southern boy and his summer romance with a wealthy girl whose parents do not approve. After a passionate few months, the two are torn apart. Years later, with different lives and different loves, the two cross paths again.
Those are a few popular suggestions to get your DVD player
and relationship rotating in the right direction. If you have some other romantic
hits you think qualify, leave us a note below.
