In Praise of The Older Woman

In Praise of The Older Woman!Let's talk Fall - Spring relationships. For anybody who doesn't know, this means a relationship between an older person and a younger paramour. You could say that any of Jack Nicholson's more recent flings would fall under this category (ditto Michael Douglas/Catherine Zeta-Jones), but what about an older woman dating a strapping young dude? Of course, if you want to stick to your own generation, that's fine and dandy (senior dating sites are almost as popular as their typically younger equivalents). But why should Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher have all the fun? Celebrities and financial magnates shouldn't be the only people dabbling in mixed age dating.

Shy Love in an Outgoing World

Shy Love!Coyness is underrated. In an age of visible thongs ("whale tails" as they're not so affectionately called), stripper reality shows, and the collective tackiness of Paris Hilton/Tara Reid/Lindsey Lohan, a little coyness can be alluring and attractive. But shy love has got it's risks as well. One of the more frustrating events in life is not unrequited love, but love left unsaid. It's difficult for some people to summon the nerve and say something, anything, to the object of their affection. You either end up in the friend-zone (which isn't necessarily bad, but it can be frequently fraught with tension) or simply drifting apart from your paramour as a result of being too shy/coy/polite etc etc. Overcoming awkwardness is pretty basic, but it's hardly an easy barrier to overcome for everybody.

Searching for Military Singles

Military Singles Search! The "Dear John" letter used to be the staple (if not the stereotype) of military life. For those of you who were not raised on MASH re-runs, a "Dear John" letter consists of a wife writing a passive-aggressive letter to her indisposed husband that the marriage is over (this announcement was sometimes coupled with a surprise like the wife saying that she had fallen in love with the milkman/pizza delivery guy/shoe salesman etc). Times have changed and the world has shrunk since those days - it's easier than ever for those in the armed forces to date, and military singles aren't limited to waiting for snail mail to bring them word of their romantic lives. There are plenty of military dating sites out there, but let the buyer beware - some of 'em ain't as hot as they seem.

Searching Sexy Personals

Searching Sexy PersonalsIf you're anything like me, you too also enjoy surfing around on dating sites that are geared primarily towards sex (or you're still cruising around the singles ads in the back of newspapers). Even if you're not actively looking for any action, it's always fun to see how the singles scene is doing, what's trendy in dating etc. It's kind of like people-watching at bars or parks, except you've got the safety of anonymous web searches to keep the real lunatics at a fair distance - drunk idiots aren't quite so abrasive when they're miles away. Sex dating sites are offering some stiff competition against the bar scene, but it's always interesting to see if people are actually taking advantage of the medium and coming up with interesting sexy personals. Heck, even the badly written ones are entertaining in their own way.

Your favorite gay tease

Your favorite gay tease! You've seen 'em on the tv shows, you've heard them on the radio. They're called gay boyfriends, and they've been the platonic standbys for women for as long as anybody can remember. The gay best friend is almost stereotypical, and a quick glance at some of the TV shows in the best few years should indicate the typical features - effeminate, weirdly nonsexual guys and their sassy gal pals. However, I've witnessed a couple of platonic friendships like these fall apart, and it's usually because of one question - What if the feelings run deeper, at least as far the girl is concerned? Gay dating is pretty easy to do when you're another gay guy, but what about the hetero best friends who wind up being attracted to their sassy best friend? A gay tease can be awfully irritating when the expectations are raised.

Leaving behind bad relationships

Getting Over Being Dumped! There's nothing like getting out of a bad relationship; it's like escaping from Shawshank. Everybody's had 'em, and whenever a new paramour enters one's life, there's the inevitable "bad relationship" chat where you both recount horror stories. These emotional train wrecks are pretty amusing to relate with the distance of time and hindsight, but they're certainly not very much fun to go through. From the first initial fights, growing tension, and the final confrontation when one or both partners announces "I don't love you", bad relationships are a delight to leave behind. Getting over these trials is the first step to getting back into the swing of things and finding a better partner, and the freedom to talk about these unpleasant episodes with friends and new lovers is positively emancipating.

Can this relationship be saved in time?

Can this relationship be saved in time?If you're anything like me, you probably engage in the biggest spectator sport in the modern world - watching celebrities date and break up, usually in a spectacular fashion. Some people (namely people like me) will pay attention to some of the bigger relationship train wrecks only, and only when things get really out of hand. Other people may actually have some emotional investment in these celebrity dating episodes, hoping against hope that Brad Pitt really will take Jennifer Aniston back. When you're getting some voyeuristic thrills however, it's not really a question of "can this relationship be saved" -it's more like "will this relationship remain interesting to us non-celebs?" Celebrities seem to get over being dumped by chasing after another insanely bad relationship, so it's a never-ending cycle of tabloid entertainment for all.

Asian mail order brides - social faux pas?

Asian Mail Order Brides! You can get anything out of a catalogue these days; and if there isn't a specific brad that produces whatever you desire, chances are good that you'll find it on ebay. Dating has its' catalogue shoppers as well - heck, that's what niche dating sites are all about. But if you want to really cut out the whole "courtship" aspect out of the equation and pick up a partner the same way you'd buy a bag of pretzels, there's always Asian mail order brides. The whole thing seems uncomfortably close to slavery to me (isn't paying for a partner considered prostitution in most countries?) but there's apparently enough people saying "Why should I waste hours on Asian dating sites when I could just cut the bull and order one online?"

Great Romance Movies

Great Romance Movies!Every month Hollywood pumps out a number of romance movies, usually under the guise romantic comedies (you can call them rom-coms if you want to sound like you're in the know). They're easy to produce - they don't require a ton of money or fancy sets, and all they need is a couple of photogenic people to talk to each other for 90-120 minutes. Throw in some sidekicks for the guy and girl, a little fun-filled romantic montage in the middle of the movie, "Brown-Eyed Girl" playing on the soundtrack, and bada bing! Romance! I'm generalizing of course, and there are a number of great romantic comedies out there - thankfully I've seen waaaay too many of them, and I've decided this is as good a time as any to talk about them. Who's up for a little list of great date flicks for the perfect movie night in with your honey?

Shy Hot Girls

She's Shy Hot!If you've ever gone out to any sort of singles gathering place, or participated in multi-person chat room on a dating site, or even just been privy to what some folks will say to one another in a private instant messaging conversation, you know that some people come on way to strong while others seem to provoke such aggressive attention. Those who attract too many unwanted fans often see themselves as innocent victims, both on the many dating sites that are out there, and off!
