The Right Sexy Dating Service
Sex And The City has spoiled us all (well, all of us that watch HBO or rent DVDs). The singles scene isn't ALL cosmopolitans with Sarah Jessica Parker, and I think one of the primary letdowns would be quote unquote sexy dating services. A lot of these services are about sexy as a temp agency, which I suppose is to be expected. Dating services that cater specifically to sex dating have to walk a fine line after all - they can't be too racy or they'll seem like an escort agency, but on the other hand they've got to keep things enticing enough so that people who are looking for some sensual harmless fun will know they're getting their money's worth.

Dating The Rich And Brainless
Rich and brainless are two words that don't really go hand in hand anymore, at least not in North America. The cult of celebrity might make you THINK that most wealthy people are all dumber than a bag of hammers, but people forget that walking punchlines like Lohan and Hilton are in the minority. Trust-fund kiddies are thinner on the ground these days, and with that whole "death of the middle class", their numbers will continue to drop. Still, there is a number of ladies and gentlemen that fit into the stereotype of young, dumb, and carrying a ton of fun money. Wealthy dating sites don't cater to gold-diggers, but I know of a couple of instances when friends of mine would date someone with means who wasn't the sharpest knife in the drawer - the wealthy person in question didn't seem to mind being used, either. Does the term "gold-digging" really apply when Mr/Ms Moneybags is aware of the fact that they're being used?

Watching Fit Singles
It looks like a diet of beer and pizza doesn't actually meet the requirements set by Dr. Atkins. Yes, with warm weather sweeping over every city in North America, people are doffing clothes and showing off their fit (or not so fit) bodies. It's not that I'm hopelessly out of shape - I'm still capable of running up a flight of stairs, but it looks like those American Apparel shirts are going to have to sit around for a few weeks while I make a stab at exercising regularly. Fit singles have got it pretty easy - thanks to a daily regimen of actually treating their bodies right, they can enjoy the fruits of their labour while flirting at health food stores and fitness dating sites.

A Religious Fantasy
Cynicism is the name of the game when it comes to the 21st Century, at least for a lot of us city slickers. It's easy and comforting to hide behind a nice, thick duvet of cynicism to help the daily stress of the average day drift by. The Big Disdain applies to a lot of the dating world as well - it's easy to forget about lofty romantic ideals when and if you're going on one too many bad dates. Maybe a healthy dose of idealism or lofty beliefs would get some of us out of this snarky stupor. While I'm not practicing, sometimes I wish that I had continued to follow my religious background, if for nothing else than the solid community that comes along with it. It's a religious fantasy which also applies to dating - the Christian dating community is as strong as God's will, and they seem to be having a good time.

Great Gay Personals
Obviously, not everyone is necessarily looking for a relationship with a gay, bisexual or transgender man or woman. However, I would have to say from having reviewed web personals sites targeted towards such an audience, along with others that may have had a more heterosexual consumer base in mind, sites such as Gay.com really do a great job at delivering more than your standard dating site does. It's truly a multifaceted experience.

Where Are The Hot Military Babes?
Demi Moore hasn't appeared in anything worthwhile since the Clinton administration, but one of her standout movies was a little number by Ridley Scott called GI Jane. She portrayed one of the first women to go through the rigours of Navy SEAL basic Training - one of those horror show training sequences that would leave most mere mortals weeping after a couple of days. It's probably unforgivably sexist, but she WAS quite hot in that film. There's something very attractive about anybody going through the hardcore grinder known as basic training. While Demi was playing one of these highly fictionalized hot military babes, she was an excellent example of the appeal that men and women in uniform have for us civvies. There's a reason for the continued popularity of military dating even for people who would never set foot in a boot camp.

Interracial Jewish Relationships
The word "interracial" has always struck me as a tad old-fashioned, if not bigoted. Whenever I hear that phrase, the first thing I think of is the old Hays Code for movies. Among other things, the Hays Code strictly forbade any mixed race couples in motion pictures, and interracial intermingling was taboo or even illegal. We still use the phrase now of course, without the baggage that the term used to carry with it. Heck, even this esteemed website uses an interacial dating section. The whole mixed race can of worms comes into play with many interracial couplings, not just black/white couples. And yes, interracial Jewish relationships are no exception.

The Right Asian Guy For The Job
Since I've got a one track mind, the whole racial dating thing has been weighing heavily on my mind. I'm from good ol' multicultural Canada - in fact, I'm from a part of the country which has one of the most diverse ethnic populations in North America. Something like 48 percent of the male population in my hometown are first generation immigrants. Looking for an Asian guy is ridiculously easy over there, and websites designed to help Asian dating come along is almost redundant. Still, there's an exotic connotation amongst the European population when they're thinking Asia - while the region doesn't seem as baffling and foreign as it would if you were from, say, Saskatoon, I wonder if there's this crazy foreign experience that people (well, white people) expect when they date an Asian person.

I Want to Meet Beautiful Mature Ladies
I was watching a TV show last night, where a young guy has an affair with his best friend's mother. It made me want to go on Senior Friend Finder almost immediately. Granted the women on television don't necessarily represent your average sort of woman in the over 50 bracket, but I see plenty of "older" babes that in my mind look better than some of those small screen mature ladies anyway.

Senior Girls Gone Wild!
When I was growing up, I experienced a sort of timewarp when watching daytime TV. Here I was, in the throes of youth, watching a bunch of shows featuring elderly people on sitcoms and the occasional drama. The sitcoms like Golden Girls usually revolved around elderly people who, in the autumn of their years, were going through this reinvigorated second lease on life, acting for the most part like goofy kids. I've blogged time and again about the whole aging process, but one thing that I've learned from these ridiculous shows is that after a certain age, people are given carte blanche to act crazy and GET AWAY WITH IT. I'm not talking about vivacious seniors dating again, but engaging in behavior that would normally send younger people to jail. When we get older, is it a case of senility or senior girls gone wild that causes these shenanigans?

Is A Cute Fit Girl Sexist?
The comedian Lewis Black remarked that "Every thing that I've ever been told about my health changes every ten years" and to demonstrate that fact, all he had to do was ask the audience "Is milk good for you or bad for you?" Needless to say, the reaction was mixed. Not only are healthy guidelines ever-changing, but expectations about how women should look (i.e. the Ideal Body Type) is also highly debatable. It used to be that being thin was the standard for every woman - now a demand for muscle tone is thrown in there to keep the the ladies hungry and exhausted. Is healthy living really all about being healthy? Does a cute fit girl represent empowerment or unrealistic standards? And just how do those fitness dating sites summon the energy to be both fit AND fun?

Crazy Single Affluent Americans
Besides the movement to free Nelson Mandela, the movement to free Winona Ryder (arrested for drug possession and shoplifting) was one of the most stirring moments in human history (please, please understand that was sarcasm). With Paris Hilton getting off virtually scot-free and lunatics like Michael Richards and Mel Gibson copping to alcohol abuse and thereby also avoiding some jail time, affluent American celebrities have never seemed more above the law. We all know about wealthy dating sites, but isn't it about time for a new dating niche? Maybe wealthy lunatic celebrities dot com? Their garish behaviour might keep them in the spotlight, but these outlandish celebrities need lovin' just like the rest of us.

Gay Women Seeking Men: Truth Or Fiction
A while ago (well, months and months ago), everybody's favorite gay columnist Dan Savage talked about the latest trend with the gay population - having hetero sex. Apparently getting it on with members of the opposite gender doesn't mean you're straight (although it does beg the question of why people would even bother using gay/straight/bi labels in the first place). Yep, it looks like hetero sex is the new black, it's trendier than Pug dogs, Starbucks and iPods combined. I wonder, however, just how many ads there are out there for gay women seeking men - I haven't seen any in the gay dating sites, and rest assured they're pretty scarce in the straight dating sites as well. It makes me wonder if Dan Savage is blowing smoke out his rear as usual, or if there's any truth to his claims.

50 First Date Questions
Everybody knows that first impressions make the difference between a long lasting bond and a quick dismissal. That's not to say that first impressions are set in stone (and lord knows that former enemies can often become friends), but no one wants make an ass out themselves when they hook for the first time with their objects of affection. When it's time to make small talk, there's some first date questions which inevitably come up - some of them are cliche, some of them reflect a good conversation, and some questions should be avoided at all costs. Making chit chat is one of those dating essentials that one -has to cover if one wants move on up and above the first date jitters.

Our BHM's Big Dreams Missed
I recently discovered one of those ever-so-popular social networking sites. I had avoided them all for so long. However, I finally got to thinking about the girl who lived next door to me back in high school, so I finally gave in hoping to look her up. Lo and behold, I found her, along with many others from my past, which of course, knowing me has caused a minor existential crisis.

Falling Into a Platonic Relationship
Chris Rock had a stand-up bit from a few years ago, where he stated that the men accidentally gain platonic relationships. According to Rock, women picked up male platonic friends all the time without any chemistry or baggage. On the other hand, guys wound up in platonic relationships because the courtship they had going with a woman took a wrong turn somehow, and they ended up in the "friendzone". I think that's a gigantic generalization (not that Rock would deny that - it was just comedy bit and not some speech given at a marital counselor convention) but the fact remains that platonic relationships arise from a wide variety of factors including school work, meeting friends online, and yes, failed courtships. What's important is the friendship itself, not necessarily how it came into being. But are platonic friendships between a man and a woman strong enough when romance has been removed?

Is deaf love real love?
I've lived in a variety of different cities over the years, Montreal Canada being one of them. When I first moved there (and when I didn't speak a word of French), I remarked to a Montrealer friend that I was really interested in dating a French girl, regardless of the language barrier. My friend made some sarcastic comment that that's how she met and married her (nonexistent) Slobovian husband. There's some truth to her sarcastic little comment - in the movies and books, people from other sides of the planet meet and fall in love without uttering a word that either of hem can understand. It caused me to wonder whether deaf love actually exists. I'm not talking about deaf dating - I'm talking about love that transcends language. Can two people who don't speak a word of each other' language actually communicate in a non-verbal way?

How I Met a Mature Babe
I just got back from a beach resort vacation. I went alone, which wasn't weird at all since it was a small resort and was only at 25 percent capacity, so I got to know many of the other guests. A few couples asked me if I felt lonely, but honestly, with all-inclusive food and beverages along with loads of new friends, I wasn't bored for even a minute. To be honest, it was more relaxing not to have to answer to anyone, but myself.
