A Black Man Affair

Bookmark This Page

Interracial Love!A Black Man in the White House. Several years ago this headline would be unthinkable, but now here it is. An African-American has been elected into the office of the President of the United States of America. I'm not really that interested in politics, but this headline made me think about interracial dating as, I think, it serves as a good metaphor for present day interracial relationships. It is no longer merely tolerated, but it is now widely accepted by the majority of Americans.

I'm not a black man and I can only imagine how hard it is to be in an interracial affair with a Caucasian woman. Making a typical relationship work is difficult enough but being a person of color means taking extra effort to break down certain stereotypes and erase people's negative perceptions of your race. It's kind of sad that African-American men end up having to prove themselves worthy of a white girl's love to the people around them.

Obama's rise to the presidency is a proud moment for the black man because it tells the world that there is more to African-Americans than what you see on movies and in television. He is not the street gangster or the drug dealer. He is a good and intelligent man with a lot to offer and if given the chance, he can do great things that will make you proud for putting your trust in him. There's another interracial relationship metaphor for you. I guess what I'm trying to say is we're not that much different from each other regardless of race and at the end of the day, people will see you for who you really are.

I think it would be a little naive of me to expect everyone to be receptive to a beautiful interracial romance and there will always be those who will still adhere to their prejudiced beliefs. It's good to know that changes are taking place and little by little people are seeing interracial relationships for what they truly are: two people brought together by one love. They can see past the color of a person's skin without any prejudice, so we can now imagine a world where, hopefully, everyone else can do so too.
