A Hard Time To Be An Arab Female
A friend of mine is a beautiful Arab female who is having a hard time meeting a suitable Arab husband. She actually tried to date people of other races for a while, but incredibly, she was unable to forge a lasting relationship due to either the prejudices of the people she dated or their friends and family. It's pretty amazing to me that in this day and age these attitudes still exist, and I'm saddened to know that so many people in this great country can harbor thoughts of ill will toward an entire race of people based on the actions of a few, and the way the media and our politicians have so irresponsibly blamed a particular group of people for spreading terror. So, in order to meet someone, she has started checking out some Arab dating sites.
Not long ago, a woman was talking to Sen. John McCain at one of his campaign stops. She said that she wouldn't vote for Barack Obama because he is an Arab. She said she "had heard" that he was an Arab. Sen. McCain replied that "No, Obama is not an Arab. He is, in fact, a good, decent family man." I'm not sure where to get started on how much is wrong with both these people.
For a woman to be able to think that "Arab" is synonymous with being a terrorist is absolutely amazing to me. Where are these people getting their information? And for McCain to suggest that the difference between Arabs and the rest of the world is that everyone else are good family people indicates that he also has no clue and is a huge part of the problem and nowhere near to being the solution. It must be so hard to be an Arab female when there are people like this in positions of power. I'm not attempting to make any partisan political statements here. I'm just illustrating a point.
I guess what I really want is for my Arab female friend to be able to just go about her life without thinking that everyone thinks poorly of her. Arab Americans are some of the nicest people I've ever met, and I'm happy to be able to call them my friends. Not because they're Arab, but because they're good people!
