A Love That Lasts

A Love That LastsI received the following letter today from a friend. I thought it was appropriate to post, so here’s a take on love that lasts.

Did you ever wonder what makes the love last? And, I mean, past that stage when you are inexplicably drawn to each other, past the constant grin on your face, butterflies nudging each other in your stomach, the time when even the slightest touch of the finger on your skin makes all the little hairs on the back of your neck to stand up straight. I am talking about settled love, the time when love means going to the Home Depot together to buy a trashcan.

I want that settled love - like when you spend your Sunday in bed, not (just) having breathless sex, but simply reading ‘The Star’ in silence. The kind of love that makes you bring me breakfast in bed, or leave me little notes to find when I leave, just so you know I’ll think of you during my day and smile. The kind of love that makes me cook surprise you with a candlelight dinner table waiting for you at home, or you find your toothbrush with toothpaste on at the edge of the sink after I leave the bathroom. And you don’t mind that this would be the only person you’ll ever kiss or make love to for the rest of your life.

How do you find that, when our expectations are so high they are way beyond the boundaries of reality? And, yet, I think what I want is simple and not overboard – a man who will love me just as much as I love him. Or is my view of what love should be so warped and twisted like a reflection in a circus mirror?

No, T, I think your view is just the way it should be...
