A Sim Date in Second Life?

A Sim Date in Second LifeThe whole world will be caught up in sim dates in the next 20 years. It’s as plain to see as your IM chat client. We’re quickly moving towards a new reality. Sure, it may be virtual, but it will help manage our romantic time and put us in contact with other like-minded people quicker than ever. Here’s how sim dating shall go…

For those of you who haven’t tried the program Second Life (and yes, it’s a program – not a game), or others like it, for that matter, it’s basically similar to the Sim series of games – without all the gaming. At first this may sound like a bad thing, but it really isn’t. Think of it as the new frontier of instant messaging. More and more people are becoming hooked on IM – and it kind of blows. You meet someone on one of the many dating sites and suddenly it’s time to take that email correspondence to the next level. “What’s your IM handle? I’ll add you,” states the letter. That’s the end of email. Now you can have stuttered, disjoined conversations through your chat client until your ready for a phone conversation. Now imagine that from the dating site you head into Second Life – or even go to a similar portal to meet people from the start, which is more than likely what will be the case.

Once in the program, you can move around in 3D space together on your sim dates. You can sit at the end of a pier and watch the ocean and converse in real time using voice chat, not text. You can talk while spinning around a dance floor or roller rink, fly over cities on magic carpets or tour fun houses and amusement parks. This is already possible now in programs like Second Life. Sure, you can tell you’re graphical representations, but they are so easy to modify that you can be whoever you want and look however you want. However, when it comes down to it, you can exchange real pictures in the program. Despite how good virtual reality programs are, and will become in the next 20 years, you will always want to see who it is you’re chatting with.

Sim dating is here, although it much like the Internet was here back in 1995. There is a revolution under way and it won’t be long before it is the way everyone chooses to start off their dating. It also bridges geographical distance and brings people together who wouldn’t have a chance to meet otherwise. If you’re shaking your head thinking how silly this sounds, be forewarned. This is the future. It’s almost here.
