Breaking Up in Berlin
I grew up in a small town with a very German heritage. When I moved to another city to go to university, I lived with a high school buddy who came over from Germany when we were younger. Gross generalizations are dangerous but he did teach me a certain tongue in cheek "respect" for German ideas of efficiency.
He had great skill at convincing you to "see reason" i.e. his idea of reason, no matter how logical you thought your opinion on a subject was. Sometimes, it started simply by his asking if you'd ever thought of doing a task differently. You’d protest that as long as you did it then it shouldn't matter how it was done.
Soon he led you to understand that with the proper training you could cut a good five seconds off your dishwashing time, for example. If you'd just move the drying rack to the other side of the sink, as kitchens in Germany are designed. He'd say that you could obviously keep doing it your way, but wouldn't you prefer to save time. I eventually stopped doing anything when he was in the same room.
Nevertheless, I hate to admit it but as much as no one likes to be told how to do something, he actually tended to be more often right than arbitrary in his suggestions. That's why when I read an MSN Lifestyle article by Lisa Daily (11/16/06) about a new efficient way of breaking up, I was hardly surprised that it was a former German insurance rep's idea.
Bernd Dressler started the Separation Agency. If you live in Berlin, you can pay him $25 and he'll inform your intended ex over the phone that it's over between you and your former flame. You can pick from "Let's Just Be Friends" or "Leave Me Alone" as possible themes of the call. If that seems too impersonal, you can upgrade for $40 to a "Personal Termination Call" that has Dressler deliver the news in person.
Finally, if you're still not brave enough to do it in person yourself but you're still worried about the last of your things left at your ex's home, for $65, Dressler will go over and pick up your belongings while he dumps your unwanted paramour. The man does insist however, you provide him first with three reasonable reasons for wanting to end the relationship before you sign the termination contract he provides.
Several US companies have tried and failed with the same sorts of services, mostly based on rejection by email or post. Once again, it seems to take German know-how to get the job done right!
