Deaf Disability Dating
I recently reviewed Deafs, a dating site targeting people with hearing loss. The site appeared like any other dating site. There were no specific questions that required you to state what degree of hearing loss you suffered from. This is in sharp contrast to STD dating sites like Positive Love, which asks users a number of specific questions as to what they suffer from. Hearing loss obviously doesn’t have the same impact on relationships that STD’s do.
Still, when I see a dating site that looks to target a specific niche, I’d like to think that there’s more to it than a company that’s trying to rake in coin – especially when that dating site focuses on disabilities! If I ran a site for the deaf I’d at least include optional additional essay(s) that asked about the particulars. Are you deaf or do you use assistive learning systems or assistive learning devices – ALS and ALD’s? How long have you been like this? Can you lip read/sign? I admit I don’t know much about being deaf other than having a father who is hard of hearing and who wears hearing aids. But if I ran a dating site that was specific to Deaf singles, I’d sure as heck ensure that I went out of my way to let people know I’ve done my research. This business is about love and there’s no room, in my books, for those looking to take advantage of such a powerful driving force in our lives.
