Is it a gender thing? Probably not as it's not only Spanish and Latina women that have this appeal. The dearth of romance novels starring Spanish or other Latin dudes as the dashing, exotic, unattainable heartthrob would indicate the ladies have quite a few erotic Spanish fantasies as well. I bet that a good number of them getting ready to go on a date with one of these dashing gentlemen in the real world probably brush up on their French kissing techniques before heading out. If it's not a gender thing, then just what is the special appeal?

My guess would have to be that it has to do with two factors: the heat in Spain and South American Latin countries and the fact that for the past century or so, most mainstream literature and media has either originated from or carries the bias of northern and western countries which sees Spanish people as exotic sexy Latin babes.

Why does this erotic Spanish notion persist today, though, in a global village where everyone is interconnected and no one really seems exotic anymore? Why does it persist in a world where people whose national origins trace back to hot countries now live in the north and vice-versa? Could it be some latent cultural stereotyping or a nostalgic claim to past characterizations that is driving the notion? I'd say that maybe it has more to do with the fact that Spanish men and women are generally really good in bed, but that's just me.
