In one sense, it might seem kind of odd to want to limit your options to a specific cultural group. Most of us live, work and socialize with all kinds of people that come from wildly different cultural and ethnic backgrounds. That's especially true for those of us who live in cities, but the world in general is getting progressively more diverse.

I think most of us like it this way and really embrace the new experiences this diversity adds to our lives. However, be that as it may, our conceptions of beauty, romance and love are very much a product of our upbringing and the context in which we're socialized.

So, while it might not really be that important to connect with someone who shares our background, the fact is that we want our intimate relationships to be with people who really understand and share our core values.

It's true that there are all kinds of hot interracial romances and many of those go on to become great love affairs and strong relationships. That said, sometimes its hard to date with confidence in the sense that the relationship has the potential to become long term but you're not sure that the two of you really have the same plans for the future. Maybe we all want to live the good life, but "the good life" that we're looking for depends a lot on where we come from.
