Is Romance Dead?
I was out with friends the other night and we were discussing dating. One of the things we spoke about was how romance is dead. We spoke about things like the fact that very few men bring flowers on the first date. In days gone by, this was certainly more prevalent. There also seems to be a preoccupation with sex. I suppose that theme is timeless, but it’s perhaps more apparent now than ever before. Has it all just become a numbers game? Are we all just letting people roll through our turnstiles without really making the effort to see if a relationship has legs?
Personally, I don’t think romance is dead. We’ve swapped romance for more modern versions. Flowers now come in the form of emoticons and love letters are delivered digitally through emails or text messages. True, it’s a new society we live in and it’s very different than the one that existed 50 or a hundred years ago, but it has its own charms. I think it’s common for people to look back and get nostalgic about the grand tales of yesteryear. I just hope we’re not doing it and letting the beauty of romance in the 21st century pass us by.
