Just What Is Christian Love?
Love is obviously something that isn't easy to understand let alone define. While today it is frequently associated with words like romance and commitment, the traditional definition of Christian love stems from the old Greek word "agape" and refers to charity and loving your neighbor and God. This brings up an interesting question: When Christian singles go online today looking for love, just what are they looking for?
My only Christian experiences are fairly conservative ones. They involve family and happen either during the holidays or at weddings or funerals, so I don't pretend to be anything close to an authority capable of answering the question of Christian love or what it means in the dating world in any definitive way. What I've seen and heard, though, from my more religious friends and from that Christian cutie from Nebraska I was trying to pick up the other week (and failed) has given me enough to offer, for lack of a better description, my best guess.
I feel that today's Christian daters are looking for love in its current romantic sense with someone who shares their views and beliefs. Since those beliefs most likely include the notion of love being related to charity and compassion, this opens up the door to the possibility of spreading the more traditional love around as a team of committed people who care about each other and also using it to create a stronger bond between the two people.
To give an example, imagine a couple going to the Third World to care for the poor together like Mother Theresa did, and after a hard day's work they go out and try a little Calcutta dating. A much less extreme example would be a couple falling in love (current definition) and because of their common Christian beliefs in traditional love, sharing and being emotionally charitable with each other they end up strengthening their relationship.
Just what is the Christian love that people are looking for? Essentially, it's the same as everyone else: someone they are attracted to and have something in common with.
