Kissing Cousins: The Fight For What's Right
Why kiss your cousins when there are so many online dating sites out there? We can meet new people at any time of the day just about anywhere you can plug in a computer or catch a connection for a laptop. Is there any good reason why you should be kissing your cousin… I mean besides love?
I caught a story recently about a German brother and sister who were fighting the government over incest laws. The story told that the brother was raised by foster parents until they were teens when he found his mother and family. The mother died and the brother and sister fell in love. Most European countries have taken incest out of their law books—but not Germany. As a result, the man has spent two years in jail already, and now they’re challenging the court to kill the law. They have also taken away a number of the couples children. And all of this has happened because two people fell in love.
Two people fell in love. What are the odds of that? Having searched the world for my perfect mate, both on online dating sites and in many dark bars and clubs, I have come up empty handed after 31 years. I know finding love is difficult. I also know that it’s one of the best parts of living. Why, then, should two people be penalized for finding it?
Is this a far cry from kissing cousins? I don’t think
so. The same issues apply. I think family members are far from a “dream
date” situation, so those that find love are fighting an uphill battle
to begin with. I think with so much going on around us, with so many evil people
in this world doing sinister things, we should worry less about who is falling
in love and more about who is doing harm to the world. I don’t believe
in some divine spirit but I do believe that there is a universal standard for
what is right and wrong. And love between consenting adults, in whatever form,
can never be on the wrong side of line.
