Mark Brooks Interview with Herb Vest
Mark Brooks of Online Personals Watch recently interviewed Herb Vest, founder of True.com. True has been making headlines for the past while with their backing of a bill to require online dating services to do background checks on their members before they join.
My hat is off to the marketing team there. They’ve exploited a niche – saying people need to be protected by dating sites – and have taken it all the way to some of the top offices in the country. But I think that’s taking the marketing a little too far. But too far seems par for the course for True.
In his interview with Brooks, Vest says that they plan to lower the divorce rate in the next five years. Any person or business needs to set their sites high, but lowering the divorce rate? True has a lot of members – given. But to alter a statistic such as the divorce rate is beyond comprehension. It seems that either ego has eaten a decent portion of Vest’s grasp on reality or this is another case of marketing going a step too far. Either way, it is certainly a great example of the mindset of True – a mindset that we’ll probably see a lot more of as the weeks and months pass.
