Muslim Fantasy Made Reality By Court

Muslim Fantasy and RosesIf there is anyone looking to have a helping of poetic justice added to their romantic life they might consider searching for love on a Muslim Dating site. I caught an article in the BBC the other day that reported that an Iranian man had his apartment confiscated because he was unable to deliver 126,000 long-stemmed roses to his wife. I suppose that a boat-load of roses isn't specifically a Muslim fantasy, but I don't know of anyone else getting a court-ordered delivery.

Apparently, the man took the idea of having cheap dates a little too far. The woman reports that he was so cheap that he would categorically refuse to pay for a cup of coffee if the two of them went out together. I know people should share the wealth and the tab, but, at the same time, I can't imagine getting uppity about a cup of coffee.

It seems like this man wasn't always a cheapskate but, apparently, as soon as the couple got married, he quickly went from being a gentleman to a penny pincher. After years of stinginess that she felt was intolerable, the wife finally decided to do something about it.

What seems tragic to me is that this couple's relationship must have been more romantic at one point. The 126,000 roses were the agreed upon dowry that had never been collected. I think offering a vast quantity of roses in exchange for someone's hand in marriage is a pretty grand gesture. I also think that the fact they were never collected means that it must never have been an issue; their relationship mattered more. That sounds like most people's fantasy relationship.

Sadly, this Muslim fantasy didn't end so well. At $2 a hit, the 126,000 roses were more than the man could deliver when a court ruling was sought, and I imagine that any relationship that goes to court isn't exactly a true romance.

I suppose I find the image of actually contractually requiring the delivery of 126,000 symbols of romantic love to be pretty comical. I also imagine that there is a lot of hope for the rest of us who can get by on less.
