My Girlfriends Parents
I remember the first few times I had to meet a girlfriends parents. They were always stressful, full on angst and awkward situations. That was before I learned to speak like an adult. Now that I have grown up, I still feel all the angst and awkwardness as before – I just got better at hiding it!
I guess there comes a point where the Nike slogan kicks in and you just have to do it, get it done with and forget about what could go wrong. Broadcasting taught me a lot about this. You can be live, on the air, and still manage to function if you keep a cool head. Meeting the parents is like that. They are watching you – judging you. They are weighing your worthiness to date their son or daughter. And, as luck would have it, Dad has moved his trusty shotgun out from the locked gun cabinet in the basement and stored it in the closet only feet away for easier access. Meeting the parents can be fun and exhilarating – just don’t forget your flak jacket and running shoes!
