Since I was told that traffic is heavy on the main roads, I followed the concierge's advice to take the Metrorail when going around the city. So there I was riding the train and in between stations, there were little bits of trivia coming from the car speakers, perhaps to keep the passengers from getting bored. What really caught my attention was the one about the international beauty queens who ended up marrying Filipino men. Among those mentioned were Armi Kuusela from Finland who was the very first Miss Universe, Stella Marquez from Colombia who won the first Miss International beauty pageant and some more names I can't remember. Former Miss Universe Dayanara Torres from Puerto Rico wasn't mentioned, but I believe she stayed in the country for a few years. Her romantic interlude with a Filipino actor didn't quite work out and she got married to Latin singer Marc Anthony shortly thereafter. That marriage ended in divorce several years later, but that's another story for another day.

I'm not really sure what exactly made these beautiful women fall for these oriental men. It could be their nice, smiling eyes or their beautiful, tanned skin. What I did notice about Filipino men is that they are very laid-back and easygoing to the point that they come across as lazy to some foreigners. They always seem to find a reason to celebrate and enjoy a few drinks. You should see these guys in action when they start putting the moves on a pretty girl. I don't know about other oriental men, but Filipinos are really smooth talkers and it looks like they can charm their way into anything. That includes impressing gorgeous beauty queens and winning their hands in marriage.
