Puppy Love

Puppy LoveI had a bad case of puppy love that followed me through most of my high school years. It started in grade nine. I had just turned 13 and went to the movies one night with a buddy from grade school. We had parted ways and went to different high schools abut he was bringing a girl he was seeing and one of her friends to the show. I distinctly remember having received Polo cologne as a present and dumping it on the both of us before we left the house. I think the movie theatre still smells of it to this day, but I digress. What’s important is that it was that night that I was clobbered by puppy love.

Her name was Jen and she was blonde, bright and bubbly. She had eyes that were two different colors and a mouth that went a mile a minute and every sentence that came out of it was cuter than the one before. She lived a half an hour away but I used every chance I had to go see her. Most of this involved trips to visit her in her town and visits to her high school. We spent nights holding hands in grave yards under the stars and countless moments spinning in circles around the gym dance floor as we listened tunes played by a video dance party DJ. We spoke on the phone almost every night and I wrote her love letters and even composed a huge poem one night that I was feeling particularly passionate. At that stage, there weren't many options for us to communicate beyond that and we had to come up with creative dating ideas that would keep us occupied while being apart. This was long before instant messaging and the advent of the modern Internet. The funny part is, I don’t know that we even kissed.

But as the years went by, she found older boys who were only too happy to shower her with attention. We drifted apart and I think she tore off a little piece of my heart in the process. The good news is we’re still in contact today. She’s married and has a kid with another on the way. I am at peace now because I know that her and I wouldn’t be a good match today. We’ve grown up. We want different things. It just wouldn’t work. However, when it comes to puppy love, Jen will be my one and only memory and that is something I plan on holding onto for the rest of my life.
