My buddy was depressed because he had grown quite close to her while they served together in Irak. He's not the kind to go gaga over a chick like this without feelings being mutual, so although he never said anything, I'm sure it got really hot and heavy at one point, if not became a full-blown relationship that only ended because their tour was up.

But speculation aside, the lovely babe with a heart of gold (and apparently a hawk-eyed rifle aim) was not meant to be his. She came from a fairly wealthy family, so it didn't surprise me when my friend told me she was now the military bride of a rich person. My buddy only joined the army because he was unemployed. Those kinds of peace-time lifestyles tend to clash.

My friend said he thought he stood out from all the wealthy single men she had dated in the past. One thing that made him believe this was that the others scoffed at the idea of working with the military, let alone serving in a position that had them seeing actual combat. Meanwhile, my buddy insisted on being at the front of a convoy (the most dangerous position) every chance he got so that he could lower the risk for other people.

But alas, it wasn't meant to be. His partner in arms and love of his life is now the military bride of someone else. But he's not bitter or anything, so much as lonely. He completely wishes her well and sincerely hopes she's happy. He just happens to wish that she were happy with him.

So I took him to a little shack called "The Patriot's Pub." He had a great time with the other patrons, as each had served at least one tour in either the army or the navy. Apparently, there was even some semi-famous retired general sitting at one of the booths. But the only officer who caught his eye was a beautiful woman that he instantly hit it off with. Who knows, maybe she'll become his military bride in the future.
