Russian Dating Debacle
You hear about that jackass in Russia who was using dating services to meet women who he robbed and forced to strip to take pictures of them while holding them at knifepoint? This is the kind of thing that makes me glad I’m not in law enforcement. I don’t know if I could be trusted to keep a character like this safe. People like him make me sick.
Needless to say, there will be a group within the online dating industry that will scream and shout about this being a prime example of where a required background check to join a dating site might be a good thing. Sure, it might have worked in this case, but it may not have. Background checks are anything but conclusive from reports I’ve read in the media. But the real problem is the ripple effect that this has on the industry. It means that a lot of people sitting on the fence about joining dating sites might not and that is a true shame. I’m totally behind dating sites and their ability to hook decent people up and anything that forces people to think twice about a service that could change your life in such a positive way is nothing but bad in my books. This man is a bad man and he deserves the full eight years in prison (maximum sentence for robbery in Russia) for crimes against the women he victimized and the damage to the online dating system that he has caused. May you have a long, cold stay in Siberia!
