Senior Girls Gone Wild!

Senior Girls Gone Wild! When I was growing up, I experienced a sort of timewarp when watching daytime TV. Here I was, in the throes of youth, watching a bunch of shows featuring elderly people on sitcoms and the occasional drama. The sitcoms like Golden Girls usually revolved around elderly people who, in the autumn of their years, were going through this reinvigorated second lease on life, acting for the most part like goofy kids. I've blogged time and again about the whole aging process, but one thing that I've learned from these ridiculous shows is that after a certain age, people are given carte blanche to act crazy and GET AWAY WITH IT. I'm not talking about vivacious seniors dating again, but engaging in behavior that would normally send younger people to jail. When we get older, is it a case of senility or senior girls gone wild that causes these shenanigans?

As wiser people than I have said before, when you get old you've earned the right to have a little leeway for nutty behavior. Once you hit a certain age, stuff like littering, jay walking, driving terribly and generally gumming up the works of modern society is fine and dandy. People will cut you slack once you hit 80. I think that there's a strong temptation to see how far you can push things (provided that you're still in control of most of your faculties). Blatant shopliftting, lewd remarks made to fellow restaurant clientele, and driving on the wrong side of the road are all part and parcel of the reverse aging process. Naturally this applies to dating as well; people may have had a dry spell in their middle age, but thanks to the miracles of science and that interweb doohicky, you can make up for lost time.

There's a fair amount of fear mongering which tries to portray those autumn years as being an endless pain in the neck, as infirmities and hereditary diseases catch up with us. This kind of hand-wringing might be a surprise to people who thought they were immortal, but anybody with a firm understanding of the limited nature of life knows that you have to pack in as many good memories as possible into a full life.

Those years aren't too far away either - the quote unquote "best years" make up a grand total of possibly three decades, and if you believe the hype the rest of that time is spent either growing or deteriorating. Make the most of those forty or so extra years! As long as you act within some framework of acceptable attitudes, the chances of someone harassing a 90 year old is mighty slim.
