Something You Don't See Often In Romance Novels
When it comes to love and relationships, romance novels aren't really the best resources that can be used as a reference. More often than not, they paint a very idealistic picture on what love is supposed to be. It has to be between an attractive man and woman caught up in a frenzied passion of love and lust that frequently ends up in several chapters of steamy lovemaking filled with euphemisms for certain body parts and the act of copulation. If you grab a romance novel off a used bookstore shelf and lay it out on its spine, chances are it will open to the most read portion which is usually where the dirty parts are. With all the sex going on in these books, I wonder if any of the characters contracted anything infectious like herpes or syphilis. A touch of STD dating in a romantic love story would be very interesting.
The thing about romance novels is that they all basically share the same plot. The protagonist is usually a cute beautiful girl who meets a handsome man. She doesn't like him at first and is annoyed by his presence, but she eventually falls in love with him in the end. Romance love stories tend to revolve around this story line with different variations. They all talk about how great it is to fall in love and make love with a guy for the first time.
I'd like to see something different for a change like what would happen if the heroine finds out that the love of her life turned out to be a cheating boyfriend? What if she didn't tell him that her last sexual partner gave her gonorrhea? That would certainly make for a very interesting story.
It's not that I'm against these kinds of romance novels. On the contrary, I'm quite thankful for these books. They don't only serve to entertain single ladies, but they also gave women who read them hope that one day they'd find their knight in shining armor who will sweep them off their feet and spend their days making wild passionate love. At least in this way they get to see what's it like to fall in love before meeting their Mr. Right. I just wish writers would give their readers something much closer to reality.
