Steve Irwin: A Life Better Lived
I have to tell you, I’m a little distraught over the death of Croc Hunter, Steve Irwin. The world knows he was killed in the line of duty on September 4 by a Stingray off the coast of Australia, while diving the Great Barrier Reef. He became famous as the exuberant man who wrestled reptiles and taught the world about the wild. What he was, more than that, was a man who seemed to know true love.
For all the coverage that his death has been getting, one of the most covered issues is the connection that he had with his family. Sure, there was that time where he brought his son, Bob, a little too close to a crocodile looking for dinner. It was a little too ‘Michael-Jackson-baby-dangle-like” for it not to cause a stir. He wasn’t charged. His son is alive. His wife never left him for it. No harm, no foul.
Now his family has to face the idea of a life lived without the man they called Daddy, and Husband. When it comes to life, there doesn’t seem to two more important roles than those. To have achieved that level of success in life could very well be the epitome of a life lived to the fullest.
I just watched his daughter speak at his memorial service and I have to say, although she handled herself like a Princess, I still felt like I was eavesdropping on something that should be kept private. It’s sad to lose anyone, but when someone famous dies, a person who has done good things and worked hard at their life, it seems to really hit home that I need to put more focus on the things that I do in my life – and do them better. Steve Irwin died while doing what he loved, and had a family that he loved. No person can ask for a life better lived than that.
