The Brutal Truth about Brutal Honesty

Bookmark This Page

The Brutal Truth Human beings are a strange breed when it comes to intimacy in my experience. I find many people more charming to strangers than they are to their friends, family or significant others. Too many confuse a lack of consideration for another as a sign of being close to someone.

How many times has someone said to you, "I can't help it, you asked my opinion so I had to be honest."

Alternatively, perhaps, they've said, "If you didn't want to know the truth you shouldn't have asked."

Then there's my all time favorite to hear, "What? Did you want me to lie to you?"

Maybe, we should blame Jack Nicholson for these precious pearls, since his character in A Few Good Men uttered those infamous words, "The truth? You can't handle the truth."

Somewhere along the line, it seems that brutality has become confused with honesty. Maybe since telling the truth when detrimental to ourselves is difficult and can hurt us in a tangible manner when facing the consequences of our confession, we mistakenly think that if we say something that hurts someone else or causes him or her negative consequences that it proves the truthfulness of our statement.

Mostly our differences with other people, even if seemingly intolerable are a matter of personal opinion. We may secretly believe that we truly do know better than other people do. However, shouldn't our own success or sense of general contentment in life speak for itself without educating the world on what's wrong with it?

That's the rub right there. Learning to share your emotions without preaching one's viewpoint as gospel may be a fine line but it needs to be followed. Take it from me, not stating one's opinion enough as I'm prone to do leads to others believing that you're wishy-washy, insecure or apathetic.

Any easy going person will still have an opinion, brutal may not be truthful but truthful is not passive either. Then again, that's only one man's opinion and since it doesn't hurt me to say it or you to read it, I guess according to most people we hardly assume that it's true?!

Truth is not always pleasant but we should be ready for it.

It's really necessary to know everything to judge objectively. Otherwise you can loose real vision of yourself and surroundings.

Usually only close people are able to tell the truth and there's nothing to be offended.
