The Eternal Batchelor
Everyone seems to know a guy who appears to be the eternal bachelor. He’s that guy who never takes on a serious, committed relationship. Perhaps he’s in and out of many causal romances with people he meets in bars or online. Maybe he dates very little. Whatever the case, he’s single and there’s no sign of that changing any time soon.
I have a few friends like this. One in particular, who we’ll call George, hasn’t had a serious relationship in years. He’s been hurt in the past and now seems to think that most of the people he meets won’t cut it. Meanwhile, around him, guys and girls are hooking up on a much more frequent bases. Sometimes people ask him why he is the eternal bachelor and wonder aloud if he’ll ever settle down. George just replies that perfection is the only thing he’ll tie himself to from this point on, noting that perfection is very hard to find. Some people laugh or sneer. Perfection! Who does he think he is? There’s no such thing as perfection and what makes him think he deserves the best. George knows how some people feel about him. He just smiles and goes about his business. You see, George is under the impression that he’s serving a higher purpose. It’s not that he is spiritual in any way and he’s certainly no man of the cloth. What George believes in is destiny. He believes that every day he can make himself a little better. He can tackle a problem in his character and make improve himself. He can work on things such as his relationships with people, his friends, family and acquaintances. He believes that with solid work he can change and sculpt who he is. To George, entering into any relationship that doesn’t hit him over the head just doesn’t seem realistic until he’s built himself into the man he wants to be. Some people see George as the eternal bachelor but I see him more as an eternal student. Maybe one day he’ll reach in enlightenment. If he does, I’m sure he’ll find the woman of his dreams and live a life that will inspire others. And really, there isn’t anything better in life than that.
