The Piano Playing Banker
I’ve got a friend who was on American Singles for a while. She was telling me this story of this guy she met about a month ago who was this big investment banker in New York. He was quite a talented bloke – painted and wrote poetry in his spare time and played the piano pretty well. She went out a few times with him. They did the traditional stuff – went to a coffee shop, then to an exhibit at a gallery and then out for dinner another night.
By the time of the forth date, she was beginning to feel a bit more comfortable with him. One of her friends was having a party so she invited him to go. Her friend was a musician and she thought her new guy could chat with him. There was even a piano in the foyer in case he grabbed felt the urge to play. As the night went on, the party got going and eventually they did drift towards the piano. Crowded around it, the host tried striking up a conversation with Mr. X about his skills and encouraged him to take a seat. But instead of jumping at the opportunity, he tripped around in his conversation – apparently sounding like he’d never played the piano before – and refused to play saying it had been forever since he’d sat. The moment passed but my friends friends had mentioned to her that this guy seemed a little weird to them. She didn’t see it but decided to do some research herself via the Internet. It turns out this guy, who was supposed to have been born and raised in the city, actually came from a small farm town in Ohio. She couldn’t find anything about his performances as a pianist online and when she entered some of the text of poems he had sent her, they turned out to be written by someone else. Going a step further, she even looked into the company he said he worked for – it didn’t even exist! Needless to say this is a rare case. The moral of the story is – well, there is none. This is life, online or off, so just be damn careful who you connect with!
