I'd have to say that in many ways it is like a normal kiss. On an obvious level, they both have the same functionality. On a more subtle level they could easily both have the same passion or lack thereof. There are different types of relationships in civilian life just as there are in military life. There is, however, one situation where I feel there's a big difference between the two types of kisses.

When military wives kiss their husbands goodbye before they get on a plane that will take them far away for a tour of duty, or when military husbands do the same to their departing spouses, the kiss given, I'd have to say, is different. There is an element to this military kiss that isn't found in a normal kiss. It's an element of trust, but a very specific type of trust that can't be found anywhere else. It's a trust that acknowledges the unpredictable winds of fate and stands in the face of them, not backing down.

I'm not talking about the ever-present danger that a loved one will not return from a volatile region of the world, which is an unavoidable concern in this line of work and most definitely affects a relationship. Rather, I'm referring to another danger that presents itself when a loved one is stationed far from home in an ever-changing, unfamiliar environment surrounded by uncertainty about as much as they are surrounded by what may seem to them as exotic beautiful people. It's the risk of infidelity.

If the love is strong enough and can stand up to this particular risk, then there is a special deepness found in the goodbye kiss that makes, under these circumstances, a military kiss like no other kiss.
