The Wisdom Of Chinese Mail Order Brides
I was watching the news a little while ago and there was a story about a small, one-horse town in the middle of nowhere that had just been hit by a tornado. Thankfully, no one had been killed or, for that matter, seriously hurt. This wouldn't ordinarily make me think of Chinese mail order brides, but the story focused mainly on a couple that seemed to have come together through a mail order brides site and who had suffered a lot of property damage.
The story started with an interview with a farmer recounting how his barn had been leveled. He seemed like a fairly typical example of the local demographic which is mostly of Irish descent. The camera angle then changed to include the man's wife. When I saw the farmer, Chinese mail order brides were not at all in my thoughts. I wasn't shocked, but this just wasn't the couple I was expecting to see.
She began explaining how much of the damage would be covered by their insurance. The pair had been recently married and already had a lot to deal with, but they seemed to be remarkably calm. I was quite impressed.
The rural town in the story had a population that was under a thousand. In a town that small, if you're trying to meet locals, the internet won't help. You already know everyone there is to meet. However, in a town that size you might easily fail to find anyone with whom you can get along with and running a farm doesn't really allow for a lot of away time that you can spend looking elsewhere. There are always things that need doing. It's easy to see why online relationships, at least ones that start that way, make so much sense.
I think it's interesting to think that there are fairly low-tech ways of life that will continues because of the internet. It means that you can choose a life that keeps you of out big cities, but you can still have the opportunity to meet people from all over the world. It's also nice to know that you aren't limited by your geography anymore; that the world can come to your doorstep. You can pick whatever life you want for yourself without wondering if it was a missed chance at love. Moreover, it looks like all the options mean you can really pick someone that will stick with you. This Chinese mail order bride and her new husband seem to have built a relationship that can survive a tornado.
