True Lies

I signed up for True.com the other day. This site has received a load of media attention as of late as it attempts to push for legislation requiring background checks on dating sites. If a site is going to stand on its soap box and scream to the world that there needs to be closer scrutiny of members, that site had better make sure it’s own house is clean.

Now get this: I signed up for True. I’m a 30 year old male who didn’t post a photo and only included the most simple of profile essays. I skipped everything else they’d let me skip. I only logged in on that first day and again two weeks latter to check mail. In that two week time frame, I received EIGHT signs of interest from members. EIGHT! If you’re new to online dating, that number is amazing considering my demographic and profile. I’d even go as far as to scream BULLSHIT! It can’t be proven, to be sure, but I’d bet everything I have that True is fishing for signups. Stand on your soapbox and scream all you want True. Your judgment day will come and your true colors will lead to your defeat!

I read a story recently about another dating site paying people to go out on dates... now this. Personally I'm freaked out by meeting complete strangers... which is why I've been cautious about online dating. However with the sucdess stories that i have heard, I want to try it. But now I wonder, how much of this is bullshit?

I joined true for their free trial period. They had a feature that sent out something like 20 'winks' to people who met your criteria. So if you clicked on that feature, it automatically sent out the winks without you even knowing who the winks went to. Could it be possible that is why you received those signs of interest?

Sure, that can account for it, but you and I know it's just a loophole. It's their way of fishing for signups and shirking the responsibility that they have as a dating site. If you're going to scream from the pulpit that the dating industry needs to clean up its act, you had better ensure that you have your act in order, don't you think?
