Truth in Profiles

Bookmark This Page

Truth in ProfilesOnline dating is part reality and part smoke and mirrors. You couldn’t hope to convey who you are in a few lines of text and a bunch of snapshots. Likewise, you can’t expect anyone else to be able to do it either. There’s an implied understanding that everyone should be mostly what they seem, though.

It’s one thing to be able to write answers to questions yourself. It’s another to be forced to answer questions. I’ve struggled in the past with this one. Some companies will let you skip questions and they won’t shop up on your profile. Other companies have questions posted no matter what. I can understand age, height and body shape. My problem comes to questions such as religion, income, drinking, drugs and other more personal questions. You probably wouldn’t answer these questions unless you were chatting with someone you knew really well. Now I’m a little more open than most so it’s not a huge deal, but I still get offended when I’m forced to answer. I’ve even taken to throwing up smoke on occasion and lying for some of the big questions. It probably isn’t right, but then again, I’m paying for a service and I should get what I want the way I want it, I’d say. Anyway, I just needed to rant about the truth in profiles and the lack thereof. Here’s hoping your profile is a little more reality and a little less smoke.

If you think about it, though, even on a face-to-face date, people are going to try to put their best foot forward. In doing so, are they "lying?" No one is going to show up for their first date and be like "hey I'm poor." Nope, you wear your best clothes and hope to fool them.

Online is no different.

Very good point, Joseph. But at least in person you can get a feel for them - a bit of a vibe. Digital just doesn't convey what reality can. A wolf in sheeps clothing will always give himself away in person. You can tell by his teeth when he smiles ;)
