Where Are All The Asian Men?
I'm not asking for myself specifically, but just in general, when it comes to the world of online dating, Asian dudes just don't seem to get the same special attention that their female counterparts do in the world of hearts and romance. There are a myriad of sites, such as Asian Euro and ChnLove that focus on matchmaking Asian women to men from various countries outside of Asia, but one hardly ever sees the reversal of roles.
Granted, there generally is no such thing as a male order husband site, despite some women bemoaning the lack of men willing to commit in certain cultures, we don't see them turning to societies outside their own to find marriage-minded fellows. I guess, we generally think of Asian cultures as being more traditional and family minded than our own. Maybe independent single gals assume Asian guys would be too old fashioned.
That's part of the problem right there. As Carmen Van Kerckhoev writes (12/28/06) on website Racialious, we have some rather ridiculous (and in my mind, bizarre) stereotypes of Asian males because of their portrayal in popular culture. I quote the aforementioned writer with whom I must agree that we often see their fictional roles in the media as "weak, asexual, nerdy, kung fu masters, evil, slithery, inscrutable, the list goes on and on."
Sure, we have negative images of other racial groups on television, such as is to often the case with African Americans, but that hasn't prevented the success of many interracial dating sites that seek to attract Caucasians of both genders looking to meet individuals of color. Perhaps, the difference is that a Black, or Latino male, may be fictionally stereotyped as dangerous and macho, which is sexy. Whereas as the stereotypical image of an Asian martial arts expert who can do math without a calculator isn't so hot.
To be fair, it does seem that Asian lads aren't completely without their fans, but again it falls under the realm of stereotypes. In gay dating, there are men who specifically seek out gay Asians, but that seems to be mostly related to the presumption that they are slim, hairless and youthful in appearance. That hardly describes every Asian man regardless of his sexual preference.
Perhaps, as I am not Asian myself, I do not understand the pressures of tradition. Maybe, there is even more pressure for Asian men to marry women from within their own cultures. Sites such as Asia Friend Finder do seem to have plenty of men, not just women. Maybe, just cross-cultural dating doesn't do, so well online with Asian men.
