Black Singles is an online dating site with an obvious target market. Although there are some individuals who appear to be looking for an interracial relationship, most members seem to seek someone sharing a similar cultural heritage. Otherwise, it is like most other web personals sites as far as offering several methods of contact and some sense of community.

The profile process is much the same as most other sites. As far as identifying one's ethnicity, although there are several choices that would be appropriate for the site's audience, they tend to be somewhat broad. I found that many individuals chose to describe their ethnic background a bit more in their freeform written descriptions.

Search options include a keyword option and localized results to within 10 miles of one's zip or postal code. Results list a summarized version of each profile, which when clicked will reveal the member's full profile as well as his or her last login date. One can also choose to browse members in the form of a photo album.

Nevertheless, initiating instant messages, participating in chat rooms and to post on message boards also require upgrading to a premium membership.

As far as matchmaking features, BlackSingles has a couple of options. First, you can receive a list in your offsite email of members who meet the criteria filled out in your profile regarding who would be ideally suited as a potential partner. Second, profiles display yes, no and maybe as clickable choices while browsing results.

Selecting 'yes' will insure that one's profile is displayed with three other profiles in an email sent directly to the member without revealing which person selected yes. Choosing 'maybe' will mean the member may be included in similar emails of four possible matches. A 'no' means that although someone will still show up in search options, but not in possible email of matches.

Otherwise, there are additional options such as a personality test that results in your profile being color-coded as a way of describing in a general sense what type of individual you are. Having once taken the test myself, I know that it does generate some surprisingly accurate descriptions of your personal characteristics.

The site does have a decent number of visitors and is competitively, if not inexpensively, priced. The largest limitation to Black Singles is the inability for non-paying members to be contacted by premium members by any means besides instant messaging. Its popularity and reasonable pricing partially offset said issue.
