Some sources estimate well over half of American households own pets. Therefore, the marketing department of DateMyPet.com seems to have failed in reaching a considerable target niche. First reviewed it in September 2005, its already limited traffic then has dropped off to even lower levels today. I'm no promotional genius, but I think a dating such as this should almost sell itself. Any creative take on online dating seems to garner loads of attention. The human-interest aspect should have gotten some free publicity through talk shows and local news stories. That being said, here’s what you’ll find inside…

Besides its novel approach to dating, it also boasts a well-designed interface. Date My Pet offers many options that function well with its dual mission of not just matching compatible people, but pairing up pets, too. The smallest of details seems covered by a myriad dropdown choices. For example, you can describe your body type 16 different ways. Then, of course, there's an extensive section to describe your pet, or pets, which certainly couldn't be left out of the equation.

Free searches are also extensive. Search within 25 miles of a given location, or enter a postal or zip code for people living in the US and Canada. You can use the criteria linked to all that detailed info included with profiles too. Moreover, DateMyPet isn't just designed for singles seeking romance, but pet owners of all backgrounds looking for animal lovers with whom to share friendships as well. You can actually search people looking for what they call "pet dating" not just traditional dates.

DateMyPet.com has many community-tailored features. Pet lovers are free to organize events for their area. There are sometimes contests held with pet-friendly prizes too. The site offers a number of articles for dating tips as well as more pet-specific musings and there’s even an adopt-a-pet section. However, a couple of things that did seem to be missing form the experience were either a forum or general chat room. Contact was limited to one-on-one through email or instant messaging.

Nevertheless, when it comes down to the bare bones, Date My Pet has dug up some impressive offerings as far as bringing pet owners together. It might be better suited in some ways for finding a friend to love your pet, rather than to discovering someone to fall in love with you.
