Date.ca is less flashy than its American cousin Date.com, but it's far from being barebones. It has a professional edge despite playing to a smaller market. It’s just that I was expecting that all the content would be duplicated between the two sites and instead, each site is fully independent. The Canadian site offers slightly fewer features as a result. I am not a big fan of too many bells and whistles usually, but in this particular instance, simpler doesn’t seem better, just different.

The online interface is very straightforward. You select the area and the orientation of the members you want to see and a list is returned. On the US version, you could sort the members by additional criteria like birthdays or popularity. That said, a regular search by location or telephone area code still let’s you sort your results into order by newest members, most popular profiles or most active subscribers, on Date.ca.

"Another exciting thing to see is that the site has grown in popularity despite limiting free access."

Each result shows not only the last login date, but also even the exact time of day the person was online. You can see all the profile details and photos free. You can send up to 30 free flirts per day, or prewritten ecard to other members. There is also an interesting rating system beside each description you preview. You can click yes, maybe, or no. These results are used in "Click," their matchmaking system. Let me explain how it works.

Choose yes, the other member sees your profile in their email of possible matches, so they can rate their interest in you. Yes from both sides makes a perfect match. Selecting no, the profile is no longer presented in future emailed potential matches. Pick maybe instead, the profile will show up again until a decision is made. What a great way to clear already rejected choices from new searches, or to connect with another subscriber that likes what you have to offer as much as you like what that member has.

There are various ways of communicating, but they all require an upgraded membership. For instance, there's instant messaging, email, personalized ecards or video messaging. Previously, there were many more options for unpaid subscribers to use. Nevertheless, the localized free searches remain extensive and they have added message boards, as well as advice columns with dating tips.

Another exciting thing to see is that the site has grown in popularity despite limiting free access. That to me is a sign that paying customers must be satisfied that they're getting their money's worth. One thing that has always worked in its favor is that Date.ca is heavily promoted, aiding in popularity and increasing your chances of making a Canadian romantic connection.

I was very dissappointed, because the main selling point of this site is that it s Canadian, and, as a free member, I got spammed by 8-10 emails a day from AmericanSingles.com saying that I had recieved messages, which I was then not allowed to read. Not all were from Canadians, either. I left.
