Date.ca is less flashy than its American cousin Date.com. It's far from being barebones though. It has a professional edge despite playing to a smaller market. It’s just that I was expecting both sites to be almost identical. In the end, there really isn't that much similarity between the two. The Canadian site offers slightly fewer features. I am not usually a big fan of too many bells and whistles, but in this particular instance, simpler doesn’t seem better, just different.

The interface is easy to use. You can search to within 1.6 km of a city, postal or telephone area code. You're getting truly local results that you can sort in order of newest members, popularity or most active on the site. On the US version, you can sort members by who's having a birthday that day. That's cute, but it's not really something so important.

"Each result on Date.ca shows not only the last login date, but also the exact time of day the person was online."

Each result on Date.ca shows not only the last login date, but also the exact time of day the person was online. You can see all the profile details and photos for free. You can send up to 30 free flirts per day or prewritten e-cards to other members. There is also an interesting rating system beside each description you preview.

You can click "yes, maybe or no" and these results are used in "Click," their matchmaking system. Let me explain how it works. Choose "yes" and the other member sees your profile in their email of possible matches, so they can rate their interest in you. A "yes" from both sides makes a perfect match.

Select "no" and the profile is no longer presented in future emails. Pick "maybe" instead and the profile will show up again until a decision is made. What a great way to clear already rejected choices from new lists of matches. It also lets you connect with another subscriber who likes what you have to offer as much as you like what that member has.

Other than the flirts and free e-cards, all other contact required upgrading. There's instant text and video messaging. You can send emails too. It is important to note that to reply to messages also requires paying. Still, the localized free searches are extensive and you can also use message boards and read advice columns with dating tips.

The site has limited popularity at present. That isn't that surprising given how limited free access is. It's always hard for me to recommend a site that doesn't allow for free replies to messages. At least you can really figure out how active the members living close to your home are. Date.ca is worth having a look at, even without joining.

I was very dissappointed, because the main selling point of this site is that it s Canadian, and, as a free member, I got spammed by 8-10 emails a day from AmericanSingles.com saying that I had recieved messages, which I was then not allowed to read. Not all were from Canadians, either. I left.
