Although you can enjoy being single, online dating usually involves the search for your dream mate. The aptly named DreamMates.com is a broad-based dating site that offers a lot to those who wish to join its ranks. So we took a spin through this purple-colored playground, and we're just raring to give you a rundown of what we found.

The profile section on Dream Mates is rather generous. They offer two essay questions for members. One is about yourself and one is about your potential match. Each allows for about 2,500 characters of text. There's plenty of room to say what’s on your mind. The rest of the profile is a series of checkboxes. One downside is that you can only upload three photos.

I was a little confused when I first began running searches. Profiles popped up in mixed order. It turns out that Dream Mates uses a matching system that by default shows those who best meet your ideal match criteria first. However, you can tailor searches so that new members pop up first or so that only members who have logged within a specified number of days are displayed.

Another feature that deserves mention is the localized searches. DreamMates lets you really hone in on who's truly close to home. This is another helpful tool when looking to see how many members are active in your area. Last login details are also provided, and you have the ability to see all other profile details.

As mentioned before, Dream Mates uses a simple matching system that helps you find people who meet your criteria. For this to work, members need to fill out their profiles completely. Another feature they have is “Just My Type.” Based on the members whom you have previously expressed an interest in, it offers similar matches.

Free access is important when trying to determine if a site is worth the money they are asking you to spend. Dream Mates allows free members to send signs of interest and to respond to messages from paid subscribers. This is a huge plus when you’re just looking to get your feet wet on a new dating site.

Overall, it's a well-built site. It isn’t as slick as some of the other big sites out there, but it does the job. It also has instant messaging and community message boards, so it does offer other means of communication besides email.

The monthly price has remained lower than it was way back when we did our initial review. It continues to be competitively priced. Take a look and run some searches. If you find folks of interest, Dream Mates will be worth the money you spend.
