Fit Kiss took over from Sports Friends a while ago. The site got a new URL while still keeping a similar style and design. That's a tad too bad, because there were a few things that could have done with a bit more of a makeover. It's definitely not the best site for anyone who wants to really try everything out before committing to a monthly fee, because you have extremely limited access until you pay to play. Nevertheless, the concept - if not its execution - is great.

Fitness dating is its focus, but FitKiss.com doesn't really have anything in its profile creation process catered to athletically minded singles. No checkboxes or dropdown menus cover anything about physical activities. The only option you have is to include what sports you like in your freeform essay, which means you can't search those criteria easily. At best you can upgrade in order to do keyword searches.

Meanwhile, free searches are limited to within 200 miles of your location. When you get your results, you can't see the last login dates unless you're a premium member, which makes it tricky to judge the number of active members in your local area before upgrading. Besides results that aren't close to home, you can't be sure how recently the other members have visited the site. It's not the best way to encourage people to join.

There are some areas tailored to the fitness theme. There's daily fitness news for premium members. You can also check out message boards and personal blogs even before you upgrade. You'll definitely get the sense that they've made some effort to create a feeling of belonging to an online dating community that isn't just about finding dates, which makes up in part for their lack of uniqueness in the profile process.

There's instant messaging, a group chat room and, of course, onsite email. Obviously, to initiate contact with anyone, you need to buy a premium membership. All the same, it's free to reply to emails or instant messages. I expect that if you pay to join a site you should be able to get responses from all levels of subscribers. Too many sites try to force the other person to upgrade in order to reply to your message.

The greatest limitation to the site is its lack of traffic. It really doesn't seem to be doing well at attracting visitors to its pages. Strangely enough, despite the lack of interest, they still raised the monthly service fee by a third back when they changed the site design. It's difficult to get much from Fit Kiss unless you're willing to take a chance and upgrade right from day on
