I was a little worried that Gothic Match would appear like all the others out there. The completely black interface was to be expected, but as any Goth will tell you, there’s a lot more to this subculture than color. Unfortunately, he or she will also explain that many Gothic venues come and go, since ironically, too much popularity can make any place too mainstream and not alternative enough. Is this what has happened here?

It seems that the numbers of visitors to GothicMatch.com has definitely dwindled to already less than mid-range traffic when we first visited about 16 months ago. Ironically, well not perhaps in the correct literary sense, the monthly price has increased by a third more than before. That seems more counter-intuitive than counter-cultural in sense.

Nevertheless, if you do decide to signup free to try it out, the first part of the process is rather mundane, asking the same banal questions you'd expect to be asked on nay other dating site. The second part at least attempts to be better suited for alternative matches by collecting info such as how many tattoos and piercings you have as well as your self-described "Goth type."

Many search options are available to paid subscribers, while free members must suffer through basic searches only. That means garnering local results no closer than within a 100-mile radius. However, once you’ve paid for your membership, you can do detailed searches, which presumably from the promo info on the upgrade page allow you narrow the distance of your results to closer to home. There’s even a keyword search tool to allow getting down to the nitty-gritty specifics of any profile on the site.

It’s hard to make a decision on joining without seeing precisely what a site has to offer. Nonetheless, Goths will be able to see what this dating site is all about without much of a hassle. You can surf profiles, run searches and even be contacted by members for free. What you can’t do is initiate contact. That is standard fare when it comes to free access for personals sites. However, since you also can’t see last login dates until you upgrade, judging the activity around your home base is going to be difficult.

It never had as many members as some of the more mainstream dating sites and now it has even fewer than before. However, even though its traffic has dropped off, glance at how many members are online, blogs and community forums and it seems to still pulse with fresh blood. Overall, GothicMatch.com continues to offer a decent dating site for fans of the culture, but it could consider lowering its price to attract back some its lost boys and Goth girls.
