Profile creation is the first thing you need to do on just about any dating site. That involves filling out of the specifics on who you are and what you’re looking for. Great Expectations is no different. There are six steps to creating your profile here. You run through the basics of height and weight, fill in some of your personal interests, let others know what you’re looking for and upload some pictures for others to see. The picture department is a little shoddy. They only let you upload a maximum of three and sometimes it’s the forth or 14th photo that really makes a difference. Clearly, we’d like to see more slots open up. On the plus side, the two essays they ask you to write – one on who you are, the other on what type of person you’d like to meet – allow for 5,000 characters of text, or around 500 words of wisdom from your own mind. Use them wisely as you only get one chance to make a great first impression, digital or otherwise!

Great Expectations offers many options when it comes to searching for members on the site. Members are what every dating site is about, after all, and you’ll want to know what’s available before handing over your money. GE-Dating.com allows for that. You can search for members within a 20-minute drive and how recently they logged in. These two abilities are essential in any decision making process.

Your search results on Great Expectations are set to return based on how compatible the profiles are to the information you filled in your profile. That means that someone that answered 15 questions the same as you will appear higher in the search results than someone who answered 12. I’m not a fan of this system. Firstly, it generally means that the same profiles will come up in the same order each search – and who wants that. Secondly, the matching system is just too simplistic to put any real stock into it. You can sort by other methods, though, such as how new a profile is and another option, as mentioned earlier, to only include profiles that have been on within a set number of days.

What you can do for free on the site is also important. Again, you have access to all the searching options that a paid member would have. In addition, paid members can contact you for free. You just won’t be able to initiate the conversation – but you can reply! That’s another big plus to this personals site.

GreatExpectations.com really misses on branding but does deliver an active member database. In the end, that’s what should matter most. The price per month is at the high end of average but may be worth it if there are a lot of members on in your area. Take a peek, browse some profiles and you may find just what you were looking for in its many pages.
