MilitaryDate.com is an online dating service designed to help members from all branches of the military meet. Some sites seem to have way too many bells and whistles to truly qualify as easy to use. This site seems to have taken simplicity to a level well beyond user-friendly to the point of being too basic to be used effectively. I don’t think I've ever seen such a ridiculously oversimplified design anywhere before. Unfortunately, this service scores low in a variety of features, but I’ll give you the details so you can judge for yourself if it deserves such a beating.

There are almost no details needed to complete your self-description. Simply choose from a dropdown menu to describe your military position or if you’re a civilian, your marital status, and whether you consume alcohol and nicotine regularly. Beyond that, there's a written essay to compose using a minimum of 75 characters, but that’s it. The profile process really doesn’t demand enough information. You can only enter your location in relation to a military base, so you know right away that truly localized searches aren't really possible.

Instead, search options focus on military branch and rank as well as the closest military installation. There's an option to see only descriptions with pictures but, as already mentioned, only really basic details, like smoking/drinking habits and age, are further available to help you decide. The freeform essay doesn’t show up in the search results and can only be found by clicking on member details. It would be nice to be able to read at least a couple of opening sentences while viewing the profile summaries in search results.

As far as contact options, there's only one method to use: Only premium members can send email. It isn't clearly stated whether you can read email received from paying subscribers or not, but it seems rather obviously implied that to reply you'd need to upgrade your account. No chat, no instant messaging, not even message boards are available. The only positive thing I can say is that Military Date, after a cursory browse through the profiles, seems to have a decent ratio of male to female members, which is sometimes hard to find.

Despite being very affordably priced, I can’t really recommend this site too highly since it's another example that proves that simpler isn’t always better. Moreover, the biggest issue is that the site hasn't done well at attracting visitors to its pages. It needs more aggressive marketing and could do with adding some additional features, such as forums or instant messaging. Visit Military Date for an overly basic way to meet military singles installed at a base near you.
