STD Friends has been newly redesigned. However it looked previously, it currently is as easy on the eyes as it is easy to use. As they claim, it uses Web 2.0, so even those of us not so in-the-know about Web design can tell you that it normally gives a rather neat interface with added features that might not have been available in its former format. For example, underneath your profile pic is a section of stats that reports on everything available on the dating site and lets you click selected links to immediately navigate to different sections, such as who's online at the same time as your visit.

The signup process needs quite a few required fields to be completed. As you may be aware, currently it is more correct to say Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) rather than the older term Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs). There are several of these included in a dropdown menu, including Herpes (HSV I and II) and HIV, as well as simply the option to select a nonspecific "other" category. The site makes an effort to provide information directly and in the form of links to other informational websites about the different STIs mentioned.

There are several forms of community interaction on STD Friends, from group chat rooms to members' forums to personal blogs. The chat is restricted to paying subscribers, but other services are open for everyone who is a member to enjoy. So far, they seem to have had at least some success with this initiative but it's still too early to tell, since they only launched the new and improved version of the site at the end of December 2007.

Although STDFriends.com does offer localized searches to all members, restrictions are placed on other options unless you upgrade. For example, you can only view two full-length profiles every 24 hours, you can only send prefab greetings to 10 people a day, and you are limited to only 100 searches within that time period as well. There seems to be no way to reply free to email. Moreover, regardless of payment status, it does not appear that any last login info is provided when viewing either summary or complete profile details.

This reasonably priced site has attracted a limited number of visitors to its pages. However, given the sensitive nature of its specific target market, perhaps some individuals would feel shy to visit such a site. That is unfortunate, as several members have attested to the fact that the open atmosphere of STD Friends is very liberating.
