SoulSingles.com advertises itself as a cool, hip place to meet Black singles. They've dropped their slightly corny “keepin’ it real” catchphrase, but otherwise not much has changed about the site other than a considerable bump in price. I did initially complain about a lack of community on the site. However, although there are still no message boards or chat rooms, they've added an online magazine with articles of interest to the site's membership.

When you create a free profile on Soul Singles, you need to answer a number of specific questions to complete your profile, and I appreciate that there's considerable care to be racially sensitive throughout the process. Some sites that are meant to reach a certain group of people come across as too cookie cutter in design and not respectful of the ethnic diversity among their members despite their shared cultural identity.

Once your free profile is created, search by keywords and within 150 miles of your zip or postal code. If you upgrade to a premium membership, you can narrow the radius of your search down to 50 miles from home. Once you become a paid subscriber then you can send and receive email, initiate instant messaging conversations, and see who has checked out your profile in the last two weeks.

Otherwise, you're limited to sending the usual free flirts to show interest in other members and replying to instant messages, if you happen to receive one from a paying member. Unfortunately, you do not have the option to reply to emails; you can only read them and would need to sign up for a paid membership if you want to send an answer to anyone who wrote to you.

As is standard for many sites, you can fill out detailed info about your potential partner and Soul Singles will generate a list of potential matches. You can go directly onto the site and see the latest profiles to fulfill your criteria, or you can opt to have matches sent to your offsite email. You can also be notified of any flirts that you've recently received.

Furthering the sense of community on the site, they've added a travel and events section, which includes postings of some local dating events throughout the United States and contests you can enter to win things, such as a fantasy dating experience.

As mentioned in my intro, the cost of the membership has gone up by about 40 percent, which may seem excessive. Nevertheless, the site was previously rather inexpensive, so it remains competitive with most sites.

Most importantly, SoulSingles.com has seen a steady increase in visitors to its pages, so it offers a better chance of meeting someone special.
